Nisyros , a small island in the middle of the Dodecanese complex is rich in natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage that the sensitivity of the local population maintain alive . The most striking geomorphological point of Nisyros is the volcano . Nisyros born through successive eruptions , which presents huge geological interest , is unique in the Greek area and beyond its scientific interest , has a great natural beauty . In the volcano is considered active and because of the easy accessibility of craters , visit it every year many thousands of people and scientists . The volcano and the peace that one feels the picturesque villages of the island are the two main features of the island that will surely" captivate " you .

 

Nisyros is located in the center of the Dodecanese islands between Kos , Tilos and the cape of Knidos in Asia Minor . H Nisyros is almost circular shape and the coastline is not rich formations. It consists of volcanic mountains , and in the center there is the huge caldera of the volcano , which has a length of 2400m and 950m width . There one can admire the enyposiakous craters . The largest has a diameter of 260 and 30 meters deep and is open to visitors . In many parts of the island there are hot springs , known of which are a short distance from Mandraki . Capital and port of Nisyros : Vacation Nisyros - tourist information Nisyros - Nisyros is Mandraki Dodekanisanisiou with whitewashed houses, picturesque streets and the beautiful square , the " Old " which is shaded by large trees . The town has a small folklore museum with interesting exhibits. 8 miles southeast are mountainous village Emporeios and a short distance from it is the monastery of Panagia Kera , built on a hill 500 meters with panoramic views . Further south is Nikia the remarkable monastery of Saint John . 4 km northeast of Mandraki are the Pali , lovely seaside village . Famous pilgrimage on the island is the Virgin Spiliani . Dominates the top of a steep cliff and tradition says that in the rock cave was kept the old image and from there took the name. In the countryside , the island's trails lead to idyllic setting and thus for hiking tourism.

According to mythology , the god Neptune , helping Zeus in his struggle against the Titans , chased land and seas fearful giant Polyvotis . And when he arrived in front of the island of Kos he with his trident and a piece of the island, in exfendonise Polybotis and buried him under it . This broken piece of Kos became the island of Nisyros . Where is the mouth Polybotis created the volcano , while the periodic vibrations of the earth is nothing but the continuous labored breathing of his chest buried Titan ! The name of the island probably belongs to the pre aegean names. Homer refers to the inhabitants of Nisyros in the Trojan campaign . The inhabitants of Nisyros worshiped Delphinium Apollo , as the pelasgic Neptune , which was sacred to Pallas today . The historical destiny of Nisyros is common with those of the Aegean Sea islands . The pirates pillaged the region until the island in 1312 to the Knights of Rhodes . In 1522 the Turks occupied the island in 1912 and the Italians took over and by the end of the Second World War Nisyros incorporated in Greece .

Nisyros Beaches

 

Municipal bus takes you free of the surrounding villages and beaches.Thick Sand - Small and wide beach with coarse dark sand .Relatively close tavern .Groove - a bit remote , located after the Emporio and has large pebbles . There is road access to the beach . Here you will find the chapel of St. Panteleimon .

WITH EASY ACCESS

Gialiskarion - known as White Beach or White beach, as it was the oldest name because of the bump that was on the coast . It has now become again the dark sand. Here you will find large trees and a tavern .Pali - the most cosmopolitan beach. With dark sand and trees , located near the village . There are rooms, restaurants , cafes , as well as a marina for the convenience of sailing .Church - Located between the harbor and the baths and is sandy.St. Sabbas - Located in Mandraki is sandy.Behind the beach tavern .Chochlaki - This is the nearest beach to Mandraki . It took its name from the large jet-black and smooth pebbles , which have volcanic origin .Lies - Great sand beach with sequential or even mixed with pebbles. It works pretty tavern .Katsouni - Located after the beach in Pali and just before the Lies . Has road access and combine sand with pebbles .

Nisyros Sailing / YachtingAlthough the port of Nisyros ( Mandraki ) is small, you can stay for a few days . You can also moor on the new marina at Pali . There Station bunkering and water to the island .

Nisyros - Historical Sites & Monuments

 

Paleocastro 

" Cyclopean " Pelasgian castle was converted into a citadel classical period of ancient city with age more than 2600 years . In very good condition due to the high quality of construction is specific for one of the best defensive works of antiquity . Made entirely of basaltic andesite , one of the hardest rocks in the world . The main gate is composed of well- hewn stone blocks with full implementation of the abutting surfaces . The total length of the wall are very large, since it includes the entire mainland portion of the rocky hill above the south end of Mandraki.

 

Volcanological Museum 

It is the first Volcanological Museum of the country which was created by the Municipality of Nisyros in collaboration with the AU of IGME and the Ministry of the Aegean in victories. The modern museum features except stands and event spaces while running all year . Additionally, in Emporio operates volcanology observatory , which feeds 24 hours with data from active volcanoes .

Neolithic settlement ( islet Glass ) : Recent archaeological excavations have brought to light a complex of Neolithic habitation in the southwestern part of the island . ( Difficult access due to the work of mine ) .

 

Nisyros - Settlements

 

EMPORIOS - Small mountain village , 8 km SE of Mandraki is Emborios . It is built at an altitude of about 500 meters and from here you can enjoy excellent views of the valley of the volcano , the caldera , and the Prophet Elijah. Here you will see the ruins of the Venetian castle and the monastery of Panagia Kera , which is built at an altitude of 450m . Another major attraction of the village is the cave located at the entrance of the village , which because of its heat from volcanic activity on the island , it is natural sauna .

 

NIKEIA - With panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the caldera , the charming village of Nikia " standing " on a hillside at an altitude of 400m . Carefully restored mansions , lighter colored doors , roofs , creating a charming village with its cobbled square that stands in the center of the village . Here are the church of the Virgin Mary , the Holy Monastery of Saint John is celebrated on September 26 , and the Monastery of Panagia Kera 17th century .

 

PALI

The pali village is found in the eastern part of the island , 4km from Mandraki . It is the port of Emporio. Thanks to the lovely sandy beach attracts tourists , there is a marina for private boats . From here you have access to other worldly beaches such as the beach and Gialiskarion Lies .

By plane - routes :There is no flight Nisyros .

You can go by air Kos and from there by boat to Nisyros .

Ferries to Nisyros :There are 2 weekly scheduled departures from Piraeus to Nisyros all year.

Travel time from Piraeus is approximately 16 hours .In summer there are tourist boats that go through Nisyros Kos ( Kardamena ) on a daily basis.

From Rhodes are hydrofoils , catamarans and ferries .
